What is SMARTconsult?

SMARTconsult is a clinically structured econsultation system, designed by practising GPs to meet the real-world needs of modern general practice. It’s safe, simple to implement, and gives your team full control over what’s offered and when - without adding to your workload.

Practices can choose from over 70 condition-specific econsultations, each built around focused clinical questions, red flag logic, and NICE-aligned decision pathways. You decide which templates to offer and can switch them on or off at any time. SMARTconsult also allows you to automate activation between 08:00 and 18:30 to meet NHS core hours guidance — no need to manually turn the system on and off.

Since 2018, SMARTconsult has supported over 500,000 patient consultations across more than 20 GP practices. It is now available nationwide with a 3-month free trial — including full access to all features, free technical support, and regular updates.

SMARTconsult was developed in response to the challenges we faced running multiple practices and managing health care for over 130,000 patients a year. Many digital consultation systems were not designed with the day-to-day realities of UK general practice in mind.

SMARTconsult uses structured, condition-specific logic designed by GPs and aligned with the latest NICE guidance. Each question flow is built to be clinically relevant, concise, and appropriate to the presenting condition - helping to reduce unnecessary admin while improving the quality of information received.

Unlike static forms or generic templates, SMARTconsult adapts to the patient’s responses, presenting only the questions that matter for safe and effective care. This reduces burden on patients and staff, eliminates duplication, and produces clearer, more actionable summaries for clinical teams.

How Patients Access SMARTconsult

SMARTconsult is simple for patients and seamless for your practice. Here’s how it works:

1. Access via your practice website
Patients click on a SMARTconsult banner, button, or widget — no apps or logins needed.
2. Enter practice name
They begin by typing the name of your practice.
3. Choose a condition
Only the econsultations your practice has chosen to offer are shown.
4. Answer structured clinical questions
Questions are tailored to the patient’s condition, age, and risk factors.
5. Red flag checks built in
If urgent symptoms are flagged, the patient is advised to call 111 or attend A&E - and your practice still receives the consult.
6. Practice accesses the completed consult
Your team logs in securely to download the econsultation PDF and upload it onto Optum / SystmOne. Integration with both systems is underway

Setup is quick. We’ll provide everything needed to add it to your website and train your team in under 30 minutes if needed.

What happens after the 3-month trial?

You can continue for £1,000/year, cancel with no penalty, or speak to us about feedback. There are no hidden charges or auto-renewals.
